This website uses the public domain files from the CEDICT project started by Paul Denisowski. The CEDICT aims to provide a complete Chinese to English dictionary with pronunciation in pinyin for the Chinese characters. CEDICT is merely a text file, other programs are needed to search and display it. CEDICT was inspired by the EDICT Japanese dictionary project of Jim Breen.
The latest public domain files (and a searchable interface) can be downloaded from the CEDICT page at MandarinTools.com.
This webpage implementation of the Chinese/English dictionary provides a searchable interface for the CEDICT dictionary for visitors to Qi Journal. Searches can be conducted by Chinese (using either the GB, or Big5 encodings), pinyin, or English. Results will show the Chinese word, the pinyin representation of the word, and the English definition(s). While the public domain data is extensive, there are some known errors that are corrected as part of the ongoing project.
Your computer must have the ability to view Chinese characters to use GB, Big5, or UTF-8 encodings unless you are viewing the graphic (GIF) images.
For a off-line way to search the dictionary, please check out the
CEL utility from
